Cost is the main factor that hinders the production of electric cars. Manufacturers must use pure platinum in fuel cells. That platinum makes up about 40 percent of the cost in making a fuel cell. Each cell needs 30 grams of platinum. The market price to buy that 30 grams is about 4,000 today.
